What is an ePortfolio?

ePortfolios enable teachers and students to collect "artifacts" of student learning and growth over the course of a school year.

Objects can include:

  • writing samples
  • photographs
  • videos
  • audio (reading fluency)
  • research projects
  • observations
  • student reflections
  • teacher feedback

With ePortfolios, the student can be given a more authentic audience (as there is the option for peers and family members to be able to view and make positive comments on the students' accomplishments).

Types of ePortfolios

ePortfolios can be broken into three types

  • Developmental - demonstrate the advancement and development of student skills over a period of time, including both self-assessment and reflection/feedback.
  • Assessment - evaluate student performance for a set of defined skills/standards.
  • Showcase - demonstrate exemplary work and mastery of student skills

Most portfolios tend to be a hybrid of the three types listed above.

Why Digital Portfolios?

EPortfolio Platforms

Below are just a few of the free platforms that you and your students can use to begin with ePortfolios!

SeeSaw is a digital portfolio "learning journal" that allows teachers and students to create digital artifacts of their work, including videos, photos, text, and drawings.  Students can reflect on their work in writing or with a voice recording when they submit (also allowing teachers to document fluency!). Teachers have the options of offering feedback, allowing students to provide comments and/or constructive criticism on each others' work, and allowing parents to view and comment, as well.

One especially nice "perk" of SeeSaw is that it allows teachers to easily create a class blog through SeeSaw, allowing them to post and celebrate specific artifacts or class projects for a larger audience.

SeeSaw offers a set of free mini-courses online to help you get the most out of it with your class!  SeeSaw 101 courses are broken into the following grade levels:

  • PreK-2nd Grade
  • 3rd-5th Grades
  • 6th-8th Grades
  • High School and Beyond
