VanHuben: Anatomy of an Empire: Home

Project Overview

Anatomy of an Empire:  You will research a Land Empire from 1400-1750 to provide a visual representation of the demise of this civilization.  Select one of the follow empires to research:

Aztec or Inca in the Americas
Ming, Qing, or Tokugawa Shogunate East Asia
Ottoman, Safavid, or Mughal in South West Asia
Songhay, Swahili city-states, Kongo (Ndongo) Africa

You may want to answer the following questions:
•What led to the decline of this empire? (long terms effects)
•What is the legacy of the empire?  (Are there parts leftover?)
Goal : After you research  the Land Based Empire from Period 4-6 (1450-1911) you selected, you will create a poster about that empire’s information.
See the Power Point  below for more details.

Part 1: Research your empire to find information about the following categories. Use this as a checklist to make sure you hit everything!

Part 2: Cite 3 sources that you used to find information. You CANNOT cite Wikipedia or Google. You CAN cite your textbook as one of the sources. This should be somewhere on the bottom left corner of the paper.

Part 3: Transfer your information to the poster and design your person to represent your empire.

Databases You Could Use

Databases are great sources to use for research.  You are assured that they are reliable, they are easy to use, and they will provide you with an MLA citation...see part 2 of the task!  The following databases are those that could be helpful for this project.

Remember- you cannot cite Wikipedia, and Google is a search engine, not a do not cite that either!  Use reliable website from reputable sources.  You can find these on your own, or you can use the links that have been found for you.

Google Web Search

Remember, if you are planning to search the web for your own websites, be sure that they are reliable!

Text Books

Text books are also excellent resources for information about these empires.  The two global text books you could use are Ways of the World and World History.  MLA citations for these two titles are as follows:

Beck, Roger B., et al. World History.  McDougal Littell, 2008.

Strayer, Robert W. and Eric W. Nelson.  Ways of the World.  Bedford/St Martins, 2016.

These books are on reserve for you in the library.  In addition, the following are excerpts from these two books that Mr. VanHuben thought might be helpful!

Books in our Library

There are many books on the various empires in our library collection.  These books have been placed on reserve for you.  Sample Titles below.

Academic Integrity

Cite your sources!

BHS uses the MLA style of citation.  Hopefully you all have your Style Manuals from last year!  No?! Fear not, we have extra copies and it is also available on the Library Website
